She might have sent shockwaves with her Coachella performance on Saturday, but Beyoncé had her mom worried about how the white audience would perceive the show.
On Saturday, Beyoncé became the first woman to headline the Coachella music festival in Indio, California. While other hit names, like Eminem, were also in attendance, it was her performances which stole the show.
However, that might not have happened had she listened to her mother, who believed that since Beyoncé would be adopting the black culture, her white audience won’t get it.
“I told Beyonce that I was afraid that the predominately white audience at Coachella would be confused by all of the black culture and black college culture because it was something that they might not get.” Tina Knowles Lawson, Beyoncé’s mother, wrote on her Instagram on Tuesday.
To her credit, Beyoncé’s mother then admitted that she was wrong with all her doubts, before saying, ‘’ “her brave response to me made me feel a bit selfish and ashamed’’.
‘’She said ‘I have worked very hard to get to the point where I have a true voice and at this point in my life and my career I have a responsibility to do what’s best for the world and not what is most popular.’’
‘’She said that her hope is that after the show young people would research this culture and see how cool it is, and young people black and white would listen to ‘LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING’ and see how amazing the words are for us all and bridge the gap.”
In addition to admitting that she was wrong, Lawson also gave the reason why Beyoncé announced $100,000 in scholarships to Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
‘’She also hopes that it will encourage young kids to enroll in our amazing Historically Black Colleges and Universities’’.
Beyoncé Making History
According to Business Insider, Beyoncé’s Coachella performance became the most-viewed live stream video of the festival in the history of YouTube. At its peak, her performance attracted 458,000 simultaneous global viewers. She also made history by becoming the first black woman to head Coachella.
In addition to YouTube, so popular was her Coachella set that the hashtag ‘’#Beychella” remained trending on Twitter even hours after her performance.
Her performance at the Coachella festival came exactly a year after he had to cancel his performance at the same set due to her pregnancy.
